A professor at the Universidad de Oriente de Venezuela, biologist and oceanographer emigrated to Pamplona, Navarra –northern Spain– in 2013, with his wife and three children. The couple set up a cafe in the heart of the city, in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. At the bar, serving coffee and arepas, he began to talk about the project he had dreamed of since he was a teenager with his two friends: purifying groundwater and surface water (fresh and sea) with sunlight to obtain drinking water and generate Energy.
His name is Mikel Elguezabal and the project is Egura Project , which translates from Basque as Sun and Water. In Euskera (the Basque language), eguzki means sun and ura means water.
The technology that uses energy from the sun has been known and used for centuries, Elguezabal told IQ Latino, but the focus of the Egura Project is to expand and improve these ways of obtaining water for human consumption, irrigation and electricity, on a global scale. , in “the tropical and subtropical regions of the planet” —taking advantage of the high sun and its long hours of exposure in these areas throughout the year.
Elguezabal plans to start an initial phase of cooperation in coastal towns, called Egura Cooperation Trials, between 2020 and 2023, so that water can be pumped from its seas, through an Egura pilot plant. A way of generating their own energy, “type mechanical windmills, or electric pumps powered by solar panels and/or wind turbines,” Elguezabal explains to IQ Latino.
This is what it consists of: once the seawater is extracted, it is taken to filtered plankton tanks that would later feed other species in its laboratories in a future Aquaculture Unit of Egura Plants, which would work simultaneously. The filtered water, continues Elguezabal, goes to solar thermal distillers that will separate the salts and send them to brine vats. A part of that water goes to a main thousand-liter boiler that is connected to a turbine. The energy to heat that boiler will be produced with metal reflectors that will surround its arch and large magnifying glasses that will cover it. The water is sterilized.
The idea is that the project can then be transferred to inland areas –not coastal– to apply it to contaminated aquifers, wells and rivers.
Egura is looking to inform Water & Energy Clusters in the Americas, to know of their possible participation together with investors, companies and citizens to start 5 new private companies: Egura: Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania & Americas within the active role of universities, companies, clusters of water and energy, investors clubs, free citizens.
The project is in line with the 2030 Agenda given the urgency of a better access to clean water & green energy. Egura Business Sustainable Plants (EBSPs) are a smart combination of well-known technologies such as photovoltaic, wind generators, and overall thermosolar devices to produce water and energy, in an eco-friendly way, thus also obtaining salts for the human, animal, and industrial uses, as well as plankton to bivalve hatcheries, GreenHydrogen, oxygen, and agriculture of coastal zones without water sources to produce food, wood, and environmental improvement.
As a projects Egura is looking for water & energy clusters in these 5 continents to create 5 new Egura Companies before 2030, located in Navarra for Europe, Israel for Asia, Egypt for Africa, Australia for Oceania, and the US for the Americas. Forward publication of results on efficiency, security, and environmental risks in indexed scientific journals to validate with peers and auctoritas the new knowledge.
Getting the Egura Companies active before 2030, would mean: providing water, energy, salts, hydrogen, oxygen, food, carbon bonds, and environmental recovery in arid and semi-arid coastal zones

Today, fears about energy and water sources are affected by wars, tyrannies and global warming. We all agree on the relevance of seeking new sources for both water and energy. That is why we have decided to take a step forward and set up companies that can motorize this project with Egura and other actors, and we are identifying allies in the following regions: North America, Egypt, Israel, Australia and NEA EuroRegion.

Egura Aim to create a new company among citizens, investors, companies, with a broader possibility of an IPO in the several regions as they develop the pilot between partners for 2023…
